You know I think the best part about living in New York is leaving the city. Sure it is great and all there because of all these trendy places you can eat and drink, but you can leave town and go to trendy places in other cities just as easily. The only difference is when you go there all the prices will be cheaper, the people will be less lame, and your New York zip code becomes as much of a conversation starter as having a irish accent.
Like an accent it also helps to be further away from the source to fully take advantage of the zip code effect. When I go to Boston you can’t really convince people to come out to the bar because you’re in town from NYC, but in the D it works like a charm. The same thing works when people come out from Detroit to NYC. When one of my friends came from California I had to take a days off of work and drive to boston because of the whole zip code effect.
The best use of this effect is on the last night in town because then it becomes kind of like a defacto personal holiday. For one night get cocked beyond all recognition, drunk dial everybody in your phone, and drag them around from bar to bar like a college freshman because you're leaving the next day.
Next weekend I am leaving New York to come back to detroit for a week, which will mean TWO last nights in town, one here and one there. I changed my departure time so that I could fit in a "last-night-in-town" -sized hangover.
