I went to go see the people under the stairs a while ago in New York. It was bad ass but sad in that they aren't playing at bigger places to bigger audiences. The warm up group was all over the stage with energy, they even little choreagraphed dances to try and get the crowd moving. Then there was a little break where I actually bumped into extra p making his way from the bar to his dressing room and was obviously the most laidback guy of his little enterouge. He agreed to an autograph after the show. Taking this as perhaps a sign I went to the bar myself to go watch the show. They jumped out on stage for the show like a teacher walking into class, they knew a bunch of people were there to see them, but it didn't rattle them at all. Then they got started. Thes one rides the beat while he's rapping like he's having a rhythmic seizure. At times it was like watching captain kirk on family guy, but it works. The constant holds the crowds attention through every song despite the fact that the words weren't audible through the stereo system there. His frantic stage presence was a perfect contrast to double k, who was kind of like the dude at the party with a buzz so deep that he is barely holding his stuff together, and yet...he's the most interesting guy there. He wasn't behind the tables, they had this machine that would play there songs so most of the time they would stand out there and do their thing, and after the song they would go back to the turntables and switch the next song and then get back up on stage like they had burgers on the grill to check on. But on the DJ song from OST double K got back there and went to work. He could do all that dj skribble back and forth stuff but he would do it while he was singing his lyrics, it was sick. Towards the end of the song I went down closer to the stage to hear them do marijuana song and then saw someone in the crowd throw a lit joint to double K who was chilling behind the tables. they closed it out with san francisco nights and tried to do what the venue wanted to do, get off the stage. They gave into crowd applause and set up an encore, and what happened next felt strangely marcum-esque. They picked the song Hang Loose, which immediately got the crowd moving. Then they started pulling the girls in the front row up to dance on stage, which for some reason, a whole bunch of dudes followed immediately. Right in front of where I was standing it wasn't the case, there was a whole bunch of hippie chicks getting there grind free of any douchebag guy looking for attention around them. This concert was a while ago and Curtis was on my mind, and I wondered "I didn't really know him, but if he went to this concert with me, would he be right in the middle of that little pocket of girls? or perhaps the dude in the front row with the joint?" I felt pretty sure that he would be the guy to tell me at some point afterwards how sweet it was.
I went around and talked to both guys after the show and got autographs, I bought double k a shot of bombay too. I was pissed thought becasue on the way out I realized that I missed this celebratoin of Jay Dilla.
