Tribe Called Quest

The tribe called quest show was THE SHIT!!! The music was perfect, except when it was better. The crowd was great to be apart of, but we could still see everything. The beginning acts were supposed to be good but the damn connecticut traffic saw to it that we missed all of that. We were lucky to actually make it, and if we would have dragged our parking lot drinking out to another beer and/or blunt we would have showed up in time for the encore. Getting in right as the show was starting made the show more fun. I felt like a little kid bolting toward the cookie jar just after my mom had her back turned. I think the crew assembled for this adventure, co teacher, tkp , her friend anna, all had this same enthusiasm, which probabaly kept the security guard from being thorough enough to find the pint in anna's purse. But our enthusiasm was paired with a great deal of luck, we found a great spot right in the front of the vip area where we could look over the sound guys and see the whole set up above the sea of nodding heads. I really don't know if I can put the actual show into words. In the middle of 'oh my god' or 'award tour' I got taken back to my living room couch where I asked my brother who made this tape with "mohammad my man" and all of the cities. From this middle school tape, I realized, my whole musical sense today grew. When 'steve biko' came on my musical life started flashing by mind. Reading the cover of midnight marauders and seeing the beastie boys, wondering what that whole 'ma bell' thing was about, and wondering how I got stuck in my little puff daddy phase. And the best was that they didn't just go straight through the songs like they are on the cd's, but they improvised and cut between them in ways that only they could have the liberty to do. Seeing them taking liberties with the songs brought me back to present, and made me able to enjoy the performance for what it was. I wish they would have came out a second encore, and I hope they get on some grateful dead, ozzy osborne stuff and just tour for every year in a big festival with more real hip hop artists like a lollapalooza with them as the main act. But mostly I hope this will give me some more inspiration to find some listenable music among the drivel thats currently out there.

the chicago show was indescribable as well. best 40 i ever spent, without question--i've never felt more at home at a concert than at that one, which of course includes phish shows.
